My ‘burning question’ right now is what toaster or convection ovens that are on the market right now work well. Mine died and so far I’ve struck out with two or three news ones I’ve tried!

Of course I’d love to win this! The burning question I have is how do you stay motivated to hit the studio every day? Although I have a list of projects that need to get done, some days I just can’t drag myself to the table. How do you do it?

I’ve been doing pc for a few months and love it. I also have a problem making stuff and then not knowing what to do with them. I first found out about PCR while goofing off on the web and came across ‘Bottles of Hope’. Problem solved, I make bottles and give them to the hospital. Finding bottles was hard but I found some at a good price in Florida. Question: how do I line patterns on my cylinder bottles?

Burning question? How “bendy” should a flat polymer piece be after baking?

Reply
Katie

Most artist level polymer clays when properly baked have some bend and are very strong. Brittle clays are not. The clay should be able to bend slightly without breaking.

If you don’t want to sell your pieces, what do you do with them? I love making things, but I can’t just horde them all. I only have so much family, and folks at work seem to be weirded out that they are free (shouldn’t you be selling these on etsy?). It almost kills my inspiration to just have nowhere to go with the pieces I create.

I always put lotion on my hands BEFORE I clay. This one small thing makes a HUGE difference. Read the post here: http://katersacres.com/polyclay/hints/polymer-clay-tip-lotion/

Also, you can gently “rub” the clay with the soft part of your finger to remove prints or use rubbing alcohol, but that will remove the top layer of your clay as well.

Excited to win anything Christi Friesen related! One question that comes to mind, is the type of clay and/or thickness of clay when baked have anything to do with how brittle it is?

Reply
Katie
June 13, 2016

Brittleness depends more on BRAND of clay and the temperature/durating the clay was baked at. Thickness has little to do with brittleness if clay has been properly cured.

This is a great giveaway! Thank you! I have been wondering about the plastic canvas that you use to sew with, do you think it’s oven safe? I have some game markers I’d like to “stiffen” up in back. Maybe I’ll just do an experiment. Anyone try this?

I have NOT tested plastic sewing canvas, so I can not answer definitively. I advise experimenting by baking a piece. Place it in a oven that’s up to temperature, let the temperature rise to 10-20 degrees ABOVE baking temperature. If it STILL doesn’t melt, you are good to go.
