Microwave Rice Recipe

Some of my friends have "rice makers."  While I appreciate their love of the white stuff, I often wonder WHY they have gone to this expense.  When I was in college I developed a love of jasmine rice.  Rice is one of those staples that I always have already made in my fridge.  I make it 3 cups (dry) at a time...yes, that IS a lot of rice, but hubby & I love rice and we eat it all the time.

So here's my "in a hurry lady" rice making secret.  There is NO NEED for a rice maker when you have a microwave.  That's right, a microwave.  For those of you who already do this, I applaud you...for those of you who have NEVER tried this, go make a big bowl of the white yummy stuff (rice) right now!

Here's what you need:

  • Large Pyrex/glass bowl
  • 3 cups dry rice
  • 1/2 stick - 1 stick butter (optional)
  • 5.5 cups water
Here's what you do:
  • Add rice to bowl
  • Set butter on top of rice
  • Add water
  • Microwave on high for 23 minutes (cooking time will vary per microwave).

This could NOT be easier!  Set your microwave, walk away, and forget it!  Simple, easy, quick, & you don't have to stand by the oven.  What could be better?

Wow - 3 cups is a lot of rice. We microwave the little Carolina flavored rice. I usually substitute the butter for half as much olive oil - less Sat Fat for a bit heart healthier rice :)

WOW! This microwave way is amazing. I do use a rice cooker, make 3 cups of rice at a pop like you, and we eat it almost every night. Brown and wild rice, though, are our favorites.

OHHHHHH Katie!!! :D You have discovered the lazy little secret of making rice and tweaked it to perfection!!! I only do it if I am being SUPER lazy or pressed for time, else as an extraordinarily discerning rice eater, I do feel there is some difference between the rice cooker cooked rice and microwaved rice in terms of controlling moisture content and consistency of tenderness! Having said that, the difference is not huge, and the biggest factor isn`t how you cook it but the quality of your rice! Wonderful post and may it help millions explore the deliciousness of RICE! :D

Never heard of microwaving rice. I never have trouble cooking it on the stovetop, but this might be worth a try.
