Polymer Clay Cat Figurine Tutorial by KatersAcres for the Friesen Project

A new tutorial just for each of you.  This tutorial is in conjunction with the Friesen Project (yes, please clap and applaud, I stayed up all night to write this for you).  Last week we made kitty cat beads, but today we’re going to make a cat figurine.  I did something fun and special for you … I made you a video!  Click below to watch the video and don’t forget to give it a thumbs up!  Now let’s go … it’s a polymer clay cat figurine tutorial …

As with all the tutorials in the Friesen Project, please remember that these tutorials are done in an abbreviated format, with Christi Friesen’s expressed permission.  These tutorials are written and designed to be used in conjunction with the Beyond Sculptures Book 4: Cats.

Step-By-Step to Make Your Cat

  1. Select Color &/or Color Palette
  2. Select a likeness for your cat (tiger cat, persian, calico, etc)
  3. Condition Your Clay
  4. Form the body with a teardrop like shape
  5. Form the head with a rounded puffy triangle shape
  6. Add muzzle, mouth, & nose details to head
  7. Be sure to blend in the top of the nose into the kitty’s forehead
  8. Add black triangle for nose
  9. Add two white dots where eyes should be
  10. Insert wired beads for eyes (see this article here for help)
  11. Roll out 4 “limbs” for your cats
  12. Attach back legs and add feet pads in another color
  13. Add any details to your cat (spots, stripes, etc)
  14. Attach front legs to your kitty
  15. Add ears near the top of the head
  16. Add “fuzz” on insides to the ears
  17. Add any last minute extras (fish, kitty food, milk bottle, mouse, ball of yarn, etc).

A FEW TIPS:

  • Using approximately 1/2 block of clay will yield a figurine approximately 2″ tall
  • Add embellishments to your cat: collar, hairbow, flowers, bell, etc.
  • My cat (as shown in the video) is ornery, prissy, and often not “happy” but “pouty” so my cat was made with that likeness.
  • I know this tutorial is done entirely different from Christi’s style, theme, & instructions.  Feel free to use Christi’s Book for more detailed pictures and alternative instructions on pages 19-24.
  • I always make & leave my whiskers LONG and trim them after baking.  This means they are never “too short.”

  1. Love the video and loving the end of it 🙂 Your Smokie sure is adorable! Must be the name because I think *my* Smokey is adorable too, but he’s a dog LOL
What I especially like is that we can have a visual of what you are doing but it doesn’t take 10 minutes of watching to see how you condition the clay. Great idea to play that faster.
Around 3:40 minutes and 3:46 minutes you have a tool on your desk and I am curious what that is? It looks like a wooden thing, might be your ‘name’ stamp or something. I couldn’t really make it out… Just being my curious self here.
Thank you for making this, the tutorial AND the video! It sure is appreciated!

    1. That is my initial stamp for my clay Astrid. It’s the “small” version. I also have a “large” version for bigger pieces. I will do a review of the shop here soon.

  2. Great! Well done video. Beautiful cat.

  3. loved the video. How do you keep your studio so clean?? Mines a nightmare. Love all the mickeys
Need to make some really long claws after that slap, lol. Loved your kitty

  4. Awesoem Job Katie!!! Well done!

  5. Good job Katie! I like having something a bit different in perspective. It helps me work toward my own style.

    Thanks
