Polymer Clay Lizard Tutorial - A Project for the 2013 Friesen Project with Christi Friesen & KatersAcres

This is a great polymer clay tutorial for a weekend craft project with a friend. Consider making this awesome lizard in pink, yellow, or even orange!

For complete instructions on making a tribal face for this week’s Friesen Project, please see Christi’s Book on page 81.

Gather Your Materials

Project Notes:

  • Many commented that last month’s project was a more difficult project because of facial features.
  • This week’s project is one of the easier projects of this month.
  • It uses tutorials that have been previously posted, whose links will appear here.
  • Feel free to use different colored clays (pink, yellow, orange, purple) for a cute & whimsical sculpture.

Basic Steps:

  • Polymer Clay Lizard Tutorial by KatersAcres | For complete instructions, please click to visit the blogMaking a lizard is very similar to making a dragon. In fact, the basic shape is the same as the dragon without the curly tail.
  • Make a blend of clay using scraps (top & middle left).
  • NOTE: While you are making this blend, your clay will naturally begin to condition itself.
  • To make the lizard’s body follow the instructions here.
  • NOTE: You basically want a head, body, and tail.  To do this, you will start with a ball, roll it to a pear, and stretch and shape it from there.
  • Your lizard should have 2 or 3 sections: Head & Tail or Head, Body, & Tail.
  • Make your arms & legs for this tutorial using these instructions here.
  • Attach the arms & legs to your body. Blend each seam to make sure the appendages are connected.
  • Now add your decorations!
  • Add dots of clay, swarovski crystals (like mine), and even some awesome micro beads to give your lizard some character.

Finish Your Creation

  • BAKING INSTRUCTIONS: FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON YOUR PACKAGE.
  • NOTE: This being said, I bake ALL my pieces (mostly Premo! clay) at 265-275 for an hour each. Sometimes they bake for an hour, twice!
  • NOTE: Get baking tips here.
  • Use this tutorial to add a patina to your mask to bring out all those interesting parts you couldn’t see earlier!
  • NOTE: If you have used micro beads, do NOT varnish your piece as you do not want the varnish to sit on the glass beads.

The Friesen Project
