I received a question through a private conversation on my FaceBook page asking me if I subscribed to any polymer clay magazines. My answer, yes, I do! So today, I’m going to take a little bit of time and tell you about my favorite subscription, Polymer Cafe … which reminds me, I think I need to renew my subscription….
Why do I like this magazine, Polymer Cafe, better than the others … well there are several reasons, but the biggest one to me is that this magazine consistently has more than just bead, pendant, and jewelry tutorials. Don’t get me wrong, they are great. But, I’m a whimsical sculptor, I am not a jewelry artist, nor will I be. The polymer clay jewelry that I make, I make for myself or give away. Why? Not only am I not that adept at making it, but I also don’t wear much jewelry (except for earrings my brother gave me … yes, the same pair every day … my wedding ring, and my ordination ring). That’s about the sum total of it. It’s not that I don’t like it, it just isn’t an important part of my wardrobe. My lipstick choice, now that is different and yes, worn every day, even when in the studio. I digress…..

My point here is this: this magazine has lots of different kinds of tutorials from a little jewelry, covering of objects, journal covers, canes, miniatures, sculptures, and many more. This is why I like it! Not only that, but as seen on the front of this season’s cover, it tends to be more whimsical in nature, which translates into the fact that I will use it more than the others, even making a project or two out of its pages. In addition what this magazine has going that the others to not, is seasonal trends. I like this because I have an online store & craft show business that specializes in many seasonal things. This means that I can go years back from the current issue, grab a magazine from three years ago in the fall and it will have fall things. I like that. Perhaps you don’t, but for me it’s a win! When I have to “search” for a project idea or one I can spin off of, searching through endless magazines for that one idea takes up all my creative time.
Let me be honest, the other two The Polymer Arts and From Polymer to Art, I love as well, but I don’t use them as much. Please understand it is not that I dislike the other magazines, I just prefer this one. While I look at the other ones and read them cover to cover when they come in the mail, the likelihood that I make anything out of them is slimmer. If there are other polymer clay magazine subscriptions on the market, I do not know of them, nor do I subscribe to them. If you know of one you think I should try out, let me know the name and if you can provide me a link below.
