How to Cover a Bic Round Stic Pen with Polymer Clay

Well, it’s about time…my first ever polymer clay video tutorial!  Perhaps I can get one of these made every month for all my wonderful readers and claying friends…but we’ll have to see.  Today’s how-to is a polymer clay pen tutorial.  Before you begin watching the video there’s a few things you will need.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • A basic polymer clay Skinner blend of your choice, rolled out on a mid-setting on your pasta machine.
  • Bic Round Stic pen with the pen’s ink well removed (just grab & pull with a pair of pliers.
  • PolyClay Blade.
  • Glitter.
  • Oven to bake your project.
  • X-acto Knife (optional).
  • Saran Wrap (optional).

A Few Notes

  • You do NOT have to have a skinner blend to make this pen, this is just what I used.
  • You do NOT need a polyclay blade, you can use just an exacto knife, or even a kitchen knife or plastic knife*.
  • Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions on the package for baking.  I used Premo! polymer clay and baked my pens for 40 minutes at 275 degrees and tented them with foil to keep them from burning.

Do You Have a Question?

Feel free to ask me any questions regarding this tutorial below or on YouTube and I will try to answer them as soon as possible.

  1. Have you ever tried to work with Pentel RSVP pens for this? Wondering if they’ll bake okay.

    1. I have not used those with clay, so I cannot answer that question. But feel free to try and let me know how it goes!

  2. Hi Katie! Quick question, since I know you have said often that you LOVE creating these covered pens. Do you also buy refills for the ink for these pens? OR??? I’m finally getting good enough covering them to actually give as gifts, but don’t want the giftees to be disappointed when the ink runs out and they think they have to throw away the barrel. What is your solution(s)?

    1. These pens are REALLY cheap. You can get a lot of the at a really decent price on Amazon, cheaper than buying refills. I would just buy more pens and take the ink wells out. But that’s me! You can get almost 100 for $14. I don’t think that’s too expensive. It’s certainly cheaper than ink wells. http://amzn.to/2oC3yNG

      1. Thank you Katie for coming back to an old post and replying. I’ve watched your YouTube video on making these pens so many times! I’m just glad that they don’t wear out! LOL
I had thought about doing exactly what you suggested in your reply before asking but second-guessed what you, or others who make these pens, do. I’m on my way to the link you provided!
        Thanks again!

  3. Awesome tutorial. Don’t know how I missed this at first. Can’t wait to see more of these in 2014

  4. I´m not an english native speaker and I wonder what tented with foil does mean. I tried to make a pen but it burn in the oven. So, ¿does it mean to cover the pen with the aluminium paper that is often used to cook?
To show that part in you video would have been very helpful for me.
Thanks for sharing and I´ll wait for your reply.

    1. I do not have a video clip of it, but the Polymer Clay Tutor does have an example of it. See her post & video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=SHBE2Xh-DcY

  5. Hi! I am retired and am just getting into clay art. I’m happy to have found you. I live in East Springfield, not far from you. Would love to know if you ever have any classes. Thanks for your help and expertise.

    1. Hi Carol! I offer home classes in my studio and would love to have you. I will contact you with information.

  6. BRAVO! ::clapping:: I can’t wait to show this to my daughter!

    1. She would have so much fun doing it Kelly – but be careful….polymer clay becomes an addiction very quickly and before you know it there’s clay and clay things everywhere! Don’t let it get on the carpet, it’s hard to get out and make sure she makes her pen on wax paper as the raw clay will eat the varnish off wood. :-/
