Polymer Clay Desk Accessory Tutorial Set
Welcome back for month 8 of our project. This month finds us with a tutorial that is more than beads, techniques, or jewelry. This month you are going to make a desk accessory set. Lisa demonstrates 3 separate “office” project in her Polymer Clay Extravaganza Book. You can use these as a springboard to make your own projects. Or if you are an extruder junkie, you might have some fun with this tutorial too.

The 2015 Pavelka Project
Polymer Clay Extruded Desk Set Tutorial
First, gather your tools. To start this project you will need only the items you are going to cover, a pen blank, extruder, and of course the polymer clay.
- Pick out some colors that look pleasing to your eye.
- Fully condition each color.
- Note: You will need about 1 ounce of clay in total weight for the pieces I have shown here.
- Form each color into a log and add some white in between each. This will keep the colors from turning brown.
- Use your extruder with a die for 4-6 round holes.
- Extrude the clay into long strings.
- Remove the pen nib from your Bic Round Stick pen so only the plastic portion remains.
- Now take two strands of clay and put them so opposite side are touching. (i.e.: the end that came out of the extruder first next to another string with the end that came out of the extruder last.) This will give a nice contrast and variation throughout the pen.
- Now add some TLS to your pen barrel.
- Wrap the strings of clay around the pen barrel beginning at the nib end and continuing all the way to the end.
- Decorate a jar (or just the top as I have done) and a ball of scrap clay as the base for your pen using your extruded left-overs.
- Wrap your strings in the same manner as described about to give heavy contrast & variation.
- Add any decorative details you choose.
- I added a wire coil to hold up my pen using plastic coated wire.
- Bake the pen, glass jar, & pen holder in a polymer clay dedicated oven for 45 minutes at 275 degrees.
