Polymer Clay Marbling Tutorial – “Shattered Marbling”

Polymer Clay Shattered Marbling Technique by Katie Oskin

Knowing how to marble clay to your liking takes time, patience, and experimentation. I’ll be honest, in many cases when I was first starting out I made some major mistakes … not enough marbling, too much marbling, choosing the wrong colors to put together. Marbling is a fantastic technique that can bridge the gap from a delicate and lightly streaked look, like Christi Friesen’s “lookat technique” (click here to get the free tutorial from the Friesen Project) to flat out striped!

WOW! What a busy past few weeks in my studio. I had plenty of tutorials to write for Club Members, lots of playing to do, and even a few challenges to figure out as well. I think I kept myself plenty busy. I’ve separated the above graphic into quadrants so you can better follow along and see what I’m doing.

Polymer Clay Tutorial: Flower Head Pins from Scrap Canes

Polymer Clay Flower Head Pins by KatersAcres | CLICK for tutorial

Why throw out all those tiny little cane ends? You can still use them, even if there’s not enough for a large project. I’ve been making these little flower head pins ever since I began making my own canes. For those of you who don’t already know, I have a thing for flowers. I LOVE them. But … I live in the woods. Flowers don’t grow well here. So instead, I made a TON of flowers in the spring & summer months from clay.

This project is a fun & quick way to use up those wonky ends & slices you may have cut from your canes. Placing these flowers on longer pieces of wire will allow them to be used as plant pokeys, tied into the center of a bow for a gift, jewelry head pins, and so much more.

Top Five Series

Polymer Clay Books

If you are a bibliophile (like I am) then books are your thing. This also means that books are very personal. Books take on a life of their own, even instructional based books. I have assembled the “top five” polymer clay books, based on my opinion alone. I will also recommend an additional 3 books that also rank very high on my list, and in fact made this a very hard decision in 3 of my categories.

If you are a polymer clay artist and would like to recommend a polymer clay book that perhaps didn’t make my cut, feel free to do so in the comments below.

One of my favorite posts that other artists do is a glimpse into their studio. I love to see their workspaces, how they create, and even the tools they use. While this post will NOT be exhaustive by any stretch of the imagination, it will definitely give you some great insight into my daily grind in my polymer clay studio.
