Does your “work” in your studio each week tend to carry a “theme” with it? I never used to think mine did, until I started my WIP Wednesday’s Series of posts this year. I realized something in taking all those photographs, there really is a pattern to my work.
Here we are, another week flown by … and I’m losing my mind … okay, perhaps not. BUT … I certainly am finding myself addicted to bugs (which I hate … but cute clay ones are my friends) and flowers lately. I must have been bitten by the spring bug, hahaha. Moving On…
For those of us who have creative streaks, we can often find ourselves deep inside a rut … sometimes one that we can’t get out of too. In fact, those are some difficult times for an artist. One of the things that I do when I’m in a “rut” creatively is to journal. However, I can often be found purchasing fabulous online tutorials for polymer clay. Or … I order a new polymer clay book and dive deep into it’s pages.
This week has been a very busy week in my studio, with Spring on the way I have been eager to start creating flowers! And like many other things in my studio, when I get the urge to create something I just follow the creative streak until it dies down. (Not to mention that since my gardening skills are not that good.) So unlike my other WIP Wednesday posts, this post is about just one thing instead of all the things I’ve been doing.
Well, this past week has been both long and short. I know, that sounds … contradictory, but it’s the truth. I spent four 10 hour days in my studio last week. This is very much out of the ordinary for me; my usual allotted studio time is 15-18 hours a week. However, I have been in such a spring-time mood that I have been making an endless supply of flowers and things with flowers, including some new Parker StoryBook Scenes. Sometimes (okay, at least twice a month) my husband and I find ourselves away from home. We always have our own meds and a way to travel with them, but since my beloved pooch has developed arthritic hips, she is now on medication too. But not just any medication, but meds that need to be cut in half for her. Carrying around this big thing of pills for the pooch was not my idea of fun. So last week, as we traveled to see my Mom, I thought “Why not make a pill box for my dog?”

Week 5 has come & gone and once again, we had two great tutorials to make & try. I have only been doing one of the two tutorials a week due to my time restrictions. But this week was one of my favorite canes, the Stroppel Cane. Welcome back to “Work in Progress Wednesday!” Just so you know, “a scrappy week” is not a metaphor or a replacement for another word. Rather, it describes exactly what most of my time in my studio was spent doing … playing with scrap clay! I’ve been so busy creating the past several weeks that I have generated a lot of scrap. Often, I just throw it in a giant glass bowl awaiting future use. When I’m caning however, I will often have a sheet of clay ready to make a Stroppel Cane to help absorb those wonky cuts.
I’m really enjoying the process of learning to make canes. In fact, where I used to be scared of anything that wasn’t a leaf cane or flower petal cane, I can now say that I thoroughly enjoy making my canes! Continue reading WIP Wednesday: Inside My Polymer Clay Studio This Week
Well, today would have been day 10 without an internet connection. Last week, in our sub-zero temperatures, our (and 93 other people) internet conked out … and never came back on. For the first few days I was okay. Then came the house cleaning, reading novels, & so much studio time. I forgot what it was like to be super-productive.
Wow! It has been a blustery and COLD week here at KatersAcres Polymer Clay Studio. The temperature has been in sub-zero temperatures, with the high yesterday reaching -1 degrees Fahrenheit. YIPES!
